LLM citations are replacing backlinks as the trust signal that matters. Here’s how to earn them at scale.
The problem is the advice has already gotten noisy. Search “how to rank on ChatGPT” and you will find a pile of recycled posts telling you to “create quality content,” “build authority,” and “get brand mentions.” Thanks. Very helpful.
This article is not that.
This is about what actually drives AI visibility, what you can and cannot control, and how to build a content ecosystem that gives ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and every other LLM a legitimate reason to mention, cite, and recommend you.
Start with citations, not keywords
LLMs do not “rank” pages the way Google does. They synthesize answers from a small set of sources they consider trustworthy. Your job is to become one of those sources.
- Get mentioned in the right places.
- Get cited by name and domain.
- Get recommended in conversational queries.
If you only chase keyword rankings, you are optimizing for a game that is already shrinking.
The brands that win the next five years will be the ones that show up in the answer box — not just the link list.
What to do this quarter
- Audit where you are already mentioned.
- Pitch three to five publications that LLMs actually scrape.
- Tighten your schema and entity markup so models can resolve “you” cleanly.
None of this is glamorous. All of it compounds.
